Best Place To Buy Used Cars

Q.I will be going to europe next summer for several months. I would like to buy a car when I arrive and sell it when I leave. My wife did this 25 years ago by going to the American Express in Dam Square in Amsterdam and buying from a departing tourist and going back there when she left and sold it to an arriving tourist. She said that each transaction took less than 30 minutes. Is that still possible there or anywhere else? Are there any items that I should know or watch out for?

A.cars in the UK ar expensive compared to the rest of europe, what sort of budget did you have in mind, you also have to bear in mind the price of petrol here, my fiesta, which is new and relatively economical so an old banger would be worse, takes ?5 at a time (about 35 litres ish), which generally gets me about 400 miles perhaps a bit more... anyway, if you are moving somewhere studenty you can generally pick up a cheapish car privately for a few hundred, plus tax and insurance (this may be a factor for you as you generally pay for a year and it is illegal to drive without insurance) 6 months tax on a car under 1.6 (I think, it has all just changed if anyone can be more certain they are right then I apologise) is about ?5 and on larger engines is about ?0 but don't quote me. If the car has tax when you buy it thats fine, but if it runs out while you own it you can only buy 6 or 12 months in one go. Cars also need an MOT every year unless they are less than 3 years old. If it doesn't pass the mot you aren't legally allowed to drive it on the road, so check out when the mot runs out before you buy anything that looks bangerish. Something from a dealer will generally have some MOT if not a full new one from the day you buy it, but some dealers are dodgier than others... try online quotes for insurance, I suggest www.yahoo.co.uk for searches for uk car insurance companies. Students, especially foreign ones tend to get cars while they are away and then need to sell them in a hurry, but you need to know what you are doing really, I would never consdier buying one like this but for only 6 months you could probably get away with it. Cars from dealers will look shinier but cost more and generally used cars here come with very little in the way of warranty, but may well have a full MOT and 12 months tax. Check out the autotrader web site, too, sorry, can't remember the url, and parkers price guide to give you an idea of what you shoud be paying for particular aged models - parkers should also be on the net somewhere.
