Best Time Of Year To Buy Used CarQ.Is there a best time of year to buy a used car? A time when the forecourts are virtually dead and the dealers really want to shift stock? A.Absolutely right, the best time to buy a car is when dealers have trouble selling. Everyone has their own opinion on this (and if you shop around you should be able to get a good deal all year round) but for my money the two best months should be August and December. In August most people are on holiday, in December they're spending their money on Christmas; so it's a traditionally quiet time for car sales. Also, much activity in the used car market is linked to new car sales - when new car sales are low, dealers are more likely to do good deals on used cars to bring some business in. No-one buys a new car in August because they're waiting for the new reg in September. In December everyone waits for the new year. Buy a car just before the reg letter or year change and in three years time when you sell it that could cost you ?00+. The flip side of that is that there are way fewer used cars coming into the system in August and December so you could have less choice. There is some justification to say that you can get a good deal on a used car in September and January as well because suddenly there are a lots of used cars (PXs and ex-fleet) motors on the market. The real answer here though, more than waiting for a given month, is to shop around mercilessly.
