Best Way To Buy A Used Car

Q.If I go to buy a used car that doesn't have any tax, what can I do to get it back to my house 50 miles away? Trailer is one option I gather? Or wait for the registration document to change, the Insurance to be setup, documents to come through, go and tax, then go and collect? Or can I just drive it back citing "I have insurance, Im just waiting for the documents before I can tax..."

A.That is the best way usually, except that the only thing you need to wait for is the insurance certificate/cover note. IME, that usually arrives within 1 or 2 days of telling them about it. And even that, with some companies, you can now print off the certificate online. So long as you have the insurance certificate and the "new owner" part of the V5, plus (if necessary) the MOT, you can tax it at the post office. Depending on the mood of the police officer, you might get away with that, but probably not, and you would certainly be breaking the law if you did it.
