Blue Book On Used CarsQ.I'm still on the hunt for a used M3 or 328 (depending on what I can afford when all is said and done) and the question becomes: "How much do I pay for one of these beasts?" In particular, say a car Blue Books for $32,000 wholesale, $43,000 retail what's a fair price? What's a good price. Assume that I'm buying one of their certified cars so the warranty kicks out to 100,000 miles or 6 years--nice risk reduction to my eyes. I realize that how much they paid for the car (plus the $1,000 to certify it) figures in more than Blue Book does, but I've yet to meet a dealer who would tell me what they paid for a used car. Thanks a ton for everyone's help & support. I'm looking forward to posting someday saying, "I found my car!" even if it does turn out that I "settle" for the 328. A.Can't really say. But do beware that the Kelley Blue Book has the highest, and often just outrageous, prices of any source on used vehicles. Edmunds in an editorial noted that these prices are based on "asking" rather than "selling". Btw, I found it rather self-serving that Edmunds, a competitor, did that particular piece. Just a generic suggestion. I think fair prices for a special car are probably dictated by supply and demand. Pricing is not regulated. You should just try to find all the cars that you would consider. List all the ones that suit your needs then look at their prices. Do the more expensive ones justify their premiums. Test drive each one - pass on the ones where you are not allowed to test drive them. Try to pick at least 2 or 3 you might want then try to leverage one against the other for a cheaper price. When each seller has given you his best price, pick the one you're most comfortable with. If there are limited cars to choose from you may be stuck with whatever price the seller is asking for if the market for these cars is good. Generally-speaking, never fall in love with anything that has a price on it. Always have an option even if it is to simply walk away.
