Buy A Cheap Used Car
Q.Well, I've stalled as long as I can. I need to buy a car for my son. I don't want to spend more than $2,000 and I want the car to run. I don't give a shit what kind of car or what it looks like. I'll be hitting a few dealers. The question to the group is what should I look out for? We'll crank up the air conditioning (a must in Houston) and get it up to speed on the freeway. I'm guessing they are smart enough to move the car around during the day if it's leaking oil. How would we catch that? I've always bought new cars because I know what kind of problems I've traded in. I need all the advice I can get.
A.I sold cars in California for awhile. A Carfax history report is a must for used cars. If you're buying from a low-rent dive of a dealership, I'd recommend having a mechanic give it a once over before you sign anything. A lot of dealerships will let you take it off the lot to do this. The mechanic might charge you $50 or so. The dealership will do you more favors if you let them know you'll be paying cash. I'd recommend trying to find a cheap used car at a name dealership that sells new cars also, like Ford or Toyota. These dealerships actually have a reputation to consider, unlike the used car pot lots, so their used cars are not as likely to fall apart a week later.
