Do Cop cars make good used cars?

Q.anyone have experience in buying a good used car? Did you get your money's worth out of it? Seems to me, that a cop car has the following 1...tons of abuse fast starts...hard stops 2. long ideling times 3. tons of donut wrappers. anyway...are they a good buy?

A.I have a '94 Chevy Caprice 9c1 that I bought at auction a few months ago, a retired police car. It has been reliable so far, apart from the transmission dying a few weeks after I got it. Sort of a weak spot with the car, many cars actually. My advice would be to avoid regular-issue cruisers and get one that looks like it was either used undercover or by a supervisor. This would usually mean one without holes in the roof for light bars, and with a nice cloth interior instead of the vinyl seats usually used for cruisers. Give it a going over like you would any other car. The Caprices and Crown Vics are usually more reliable than most other cars, and the engines typically last 250-300k miles without major work. Still, I wouldn't advice an ex-cop car for someone who doesn't like working on cars, as with any car with high miles, there's always something that needs fixing. But the big advantage with them is you get a lot for the price. My car was the highest selling one at the auction I went to, at $3500. This got me a very nice interior, a recent (though shitty) paint job, good tires, a strong running LT1 engine, and everything works. The Crown Vics went for between $1000 for a ragged out cruiser with the markings spray-painted over to $2900 for a 2001 that looked virtually brand new with a little over 100k miles. You definitley get more bang for your buck with these cars than most others. here is how it works, 24 hrs of engine running on most of the cars.. pretty good general service maint... fleet mech. supervisor tracks how much money is spendt on each car via computer and when the repairs rack up too much they get rid of the cars..... depends on who does the repair work... mostly dealers in our area as they have the tools and knowledge to do the repairs... if the repair is not done right and no one complains then the repair is never corrected( on my personal car i would squeel like a pig after paying big bucks to correct something).. if it was not my car and it ran OK then i would just keep driving it until the wheels fell off as i dont have to worry about the repair cost... so its a crap shoot some cars are pretty good, some are junk and good for parts. just remember that the gas mileage is gonna be terrible, repair parts expensive as the high performance parts do carry a premium and used/junk car parts might be hard to come by????? as they do not have as many police package junks sitting around as the general run of the mill family car in the junk yards.......as the production on the reg. ones was much higher....
