Buy Here Pay Here Used Car Dealers

Q.I have seen several signs in town on used car dealers signs that advertise "cash price". Can a dealer charge me less if I decide to finance the car? How about if I need to use sub prime or buy here pay here options?

A.Used car prices are generally VERY negotiable. You can usually get a better price than the advertised price for just about any reason whatever. If they stand to make a bundle on the financing, they might give you some break on the price. If they stand to make a bundle on the price, they might give you a break on the trade-in: some car dealerships claim to give you $2000 for any used car in any condition as a trade-in. In one radio commercial they claimed to have accepted a wrecked bicycle (doubtful it was worth $400 NEW, and this one had apparently been crushed, either in a junkyard or in a probably-fatal accident) as a $2000 trade-in. Some used car dealers offer discounts for, and I quote: "SNAIL DAMAGE" to their inventory. I thought this was really supposed to refer to "hail damage", except for the commercials that depict giant snails flattening a whole city. It still remains, whether it's in the price, the financing, the trade-in, or something else, you're going to get screwed. You can negotiate the screws from one portion of the package to another, though. And with effort, you can avoid being screwed too badly.
