Buy Here Pay Here Used Car Lots

Q.A car dealer can charge any price they can get someone to pay. I don't know what they mean by "sub prime" and "buy here pay here." Don't you usually pay where you buy???

A.These terms refer to financing. "Subprime" refers to a person with a less than (often much less than) desirable credit rating, or to lenders (also called "hard money" lenders) who extend credit to them. "Buy here, pay here" means the dealer is extending credit and expects installment payments to be paid directly to the dealer -- or it can mean that the dealer is acting as agent for a subprime lender. But retail prices in the used car business are always negotiable. How far down any given dealer will negotiate depends on such matters as how desirable the car is, how much profit he has in it at a given price point, whether he needs to raise cash or make room for more inventory, how big a chump he sizes you up for, whether you have a valuable trade-in he can get you to let go of cheaply, whether he can also sell you financing at profitable rates, those sorts of factors. "Cash price", if it is anything more than mere puffery of the sort common in the business, means that this is how much the dealer will sell the car for, before negotiation, if you are bringing the money (in cash, or maybe in a voucher from your lender).
