Q.On my E36 you could simply connect/disconnect the speedo by pulling out the little plug from the centre of the rear axle under the car. I have looked here on my E46 but cannot see such a plug. Does anyone know where the plug now is - or an alternative way to connecting/disconnecting the speedo easily?

A.Nothing like asking a bunch of people how to break the law. Not to mention one of us might be unlucky enough to buy your corrupted car later. It also gives all used BMW cars a bad name when a car that says it has 52,000 miles breaks down and dies because it truly has 152,000. This is not a victimless action. Messing with your speedometer makes you a low-life con-artist - right up there with spammers, and check-kiters as far as I am concerned. Maybe you can come up with a legal reason to do what you are proposing, but it sure sounds like you are trying to rip someone off. Here's some help. Just cut the cable.
