Q.My friend plans to buy a used car either from a private party or a dealer. Does one pay sales tax for a used car?

A.In NC, you don't pay sales tax, you pay a Highway Use tax, which just *happens* to be equivalent to the sales tax on a new car, plus the assorted titling and registration fees. This is true even if you're simply moving into the state with a car that you already own. Death and taxes.... That depends entirely on the law in the state where the car will be purchased and registered. Contact the local department of motor vehicles office for information on this question. In fact, check the state's official web site for this information because it will probably be there.
