Buy Used Cars From Owners

Q.My question isn't "would you buy a new Bayliner"...it's "would you buy one used?"

A.I would really stray from those 1980's Bayliners. when you buy used, you wonder what the previous owners put this boat through and if you'll be buying someone elses problems. And when your looking at larger boats, say over 25 feet. Most people can't afford new and the good used boats are still get a good price. Reguardless of size, if you don't know what to look for in a used boat, hire a surveyor or have a reputable marine mechanic look at it. Look at all the people that buy used cars and trucks. These vehicles are more complicated than a boat and in probably most cases take much more abuse. Yet people buy used cars and have there mechanics check them out first if they don't buy them from a reputable dealership. I often recommend first time boat buyers to buy used and plan on using the boat for a season or two. Often first time buyer's are not sure what to look for in a boat or even what style of boat to buy. This way they get some experiance using a boat while doing the things with it that they like to do. If they then decide to look for a new boat, they will have a much better idea of what to look for to find something that fits there boating needs. Typically, the cost difference of buying and then selling the used boat will be minimal. The reason I reccommend this is because I see alot of first time boat owners buying new and then selling in a year or two to buy the boat that really fits their needs.
