Buy Used Cars In Nj

Q.My wife and I made the mistake of buying an '88 Pontiac LeMans last year and now we are going to get rid of it (after sinking $1500 into it, ). Is it possible to get a reliable new car for around $7K-$8K? I have a feeling the answer is no, but just making sure. If not, does anyone know of a good late model car that falls into this price range? Oh, and one more thing, I'm in graduate school so our budget is tight, so please no "well, not for $8K, but if you could just budget $9K, etc."

A.I have one book here which recommends the following used cars in 7k-8k range: '90 Geo Prizm '89 Honda Civic '89 Ford Probe 4 (man. trans.) '90 Nissan Sentra among others. In 8k-9k they list Acura Integra '88 which would be nice. With higher than average mileage I'd image it'd cost you 7.5k. Harder to find than a '89 Civic which is damn ubiquitous. Interestingly, this guide (Consumer Reports, not really a good guide IMHO) lists '88-'89 Pontiac LeMans as a "car to avoid". Why would anyone looking for a transportation want to spend 7K for a used car is beyond me (enthusiasts are a totally different matter). If it is a _verifiable_ low-mileage (tough point, fraud is all but institutionalized in this business), recent model, then the valid question is why is it on a used lot ? When you see a car that is
