Q.I'm not about to rehearse the arguments about the lack of an all-British production car (Morgan excepted); we have imports galore. But why can UK not produce a small, economical, fuel efficient, space saving motor that would grip the mass market by the nuts, as did the original German Beetle? We give out prizes for creativity and innovation (seen it) and we even have budding young entrepreneurs with the funds. Now BMW have nicked our Mini and produced a larger than ever namesake. If Italians could produce a winner like the Fiat Topolino (once they got rid of the 4 reverse gears surely we could fabricate something better. There is a niche market forming as families decrease to 2.2/3.2.

A.Arguably all Rover models apart from the diesel 75 are "all-British" (built in the UK by a UK-owned company using UK-built engines) although they obviously owe something to Honda and BMW in design. Fine as a second car for shopping and urban use, but most people only have the means and the space to own one car, and they need one that will cater for their maximum requirement, which normally includes carrying more than one passenger, and/or substantial amounts of luggage. And, assuming a 2-second gap is left, Smarts take up very little less road space than Golfs. There are plenty of tiny cars around (Ka, Lupo, Matiz, Seicento etc) that will carry four people (at a pinch) and a couple of soft bags. The key point about the car market is that it is fragmenting in all directions and no new design will ever grab it by the scruff of the neck like the Beetle and the original Mini.
