Buy Used Cars In UtahQ.When coal was handled in box cars in the 1950's were doors boarded up part way the same way cars used in grain service were? How high would these "coal doors" be? It is my understanding that certain types of coal had to be kept dry therefore they were shipped in box cars. What types of coal were handled in box cars? A.I remember seeing D&RGW boxcars w/lump coal in them parked at section houses along the Moffat west of Denver (Pine Cliff, Rollinsville, Granby, etc.) at least as late as the late 1960s-early 70s. SInce for the most part the coal was used only to heat up the sections when crews were there temporarily, it was broken up in the box and used as needed. Obviously if in a gon or a hopper it would freeze with melting/freezing snow in either type of car and there was no way to dump it from the latter w/o fouling the track. And, even though the doors were ALWAYS open, I suppose having to climb into a box discouraged theft a little more than just having a pile on the ground. At that time sections at Pine Cliff, East Portal, and I'm not sure where else were still occupied by company personnel, btw. MOST coal on the D&RGW, and other western roads EXCEPT for coal from the Powder River basin, does not deteriorate fast enough to make shipping in a closed boxcar, which wasn't in those days exactly a sealed container anyway, a necessity. The biggest reasons were to keep lump lump (they were loaded by short conveyors extended into the cars, rather than by chutes which loaded the gons/hoppers, to minimize breakage), not to mention the fact that true lump coal COULDN'T be dumped from normal hoppers and could be very difficult to remove from even most side-dump gons because of its size; although there has never been a real standard that I know of, some lump sold from NW Colorado had (has???) a MINIMUM size of 7 inches, with virtually no maximum. I know demurrage didn't used to be anywhere near what it is now, but did many merchants really use the cars for storage bins? Lump coal is still used in many places in the West for home heating, although usually for secondary heating in stoves and fireplaces. I used to use quite a bit myself (couple tons a winter) but haven't had a unit I could safely burn it in in abt 10 years (steel fireboxes are a no-no; firebrick lined stoves and fireplaces can USUALLY burn coal but the instructions/manufacturer should be checked; most coal burns hotter to MUCH hotter than wood and has other characteristics that may not be compatible with wood-burning equipment!). AND it still commands a higher price than smaller sizes.
