Buy Used Cars PrivateQ.I am also interested in this thread. I am interested in buying a car in Britain (where I'll be living for about 6 months) or perhaps another European country. I would like to expand the question to include: -- Is it worth buying a used car from a dealer or someone who an individual. Where and how would I resell it most easily? -- I'm going to be based in Britain but plan to take the car for trips on the Continent. What's it like driving a right-hand drive car on the "wrong side of the road"? -- What insurance is required and how much does it cost? -- What are the best places to buy used cars in Britain? Which cities and dealers might offer the best prices? -- Is there anything else I should know? Has anyone out there done this and would like to share their experience? A.In Britain, a dealer should give you a three month guarantee with the car. You get no guarantee and limited legal protection if you buy from a private individual. There are chains of companies specialising in used cars, such as Network Q, but most car dealers also have second hand cars that have been taken as trade-ins for new cars. A specialist second-hand car dealer is the most likely to be willing to buy the car from you. Statutory minimum insurance is third party, although third party, fire and theft is a more common policy as the extra cost of fire and theft cover is not usually significant. Neither gives you any cover against damage to your own vehicle, for which you would require full comprehensive insurance. Cost varies tremendously. It depends on what you drive, where you live and what type of cover you have. A high performance car, based in central London, with fully comprehensive, any driver and business use cover will be very much more expensive than a small economy car, based in the country, with third party, one named driver and private use only. Generally, the north of England will probably have lower prices and SE England the highest. I am not sure whether the difference will be worth travelling about for though Other Questions : GST & used car pricesIs there somewhere I can find the facts?
