Canadian Used Car Prices

Q.How much could I reasonably expect to pay for a used car in either Canada (Vancouver/BC) or the US (probably Denver) - one that would stand a chance of lasting 2-3 months without breaking down in, inevitably, the middle of nowhere? Bearing in mind, I've never paid more than US$1600 for a car in my life...let's face it, they're just tools for getting you bike to the trailhead, right? What are the pitfalls (if any) of taking said vehicle in either direction across the border between Canada and the US?

A.You can get a beater for a $1,000 or less, and a socket set for $50 (so you can fix a few things as they break). This should keep you on the road for a few months. Expect to pay a $100 to register it, and at least a few hundred for insurance. Traveling from US to Canada with a car should be no problem as long as your passport gets you across.
