Certified Used Cars

Q.Reading the above thread on buying new vs. used I have a question to all about Certified Used Cars and dealers in Southern California. Are they good deals as oppose to: 1. Buying As Is from Used Car Dealers, take chance of getting a lemon. 2. Buying as is from private seller at better price but also risk getting a lemon. I am interested mostly in used Honda and Toyotas passenger cars, but I am open minded to other makers. I drive a 1987 honda accord lxi with over 155k miles on it. Purchased it used and as far as I can tell this car should last me a year more or so.

A.you are still at risk for getting a lemon. What's so "certified" about being certified. They had some company mehanic look it over and duct tape lose parts? I would only trust an independant mechanic.
