Cheap Used Auto Parts

Q.Last weekend I was at a gun show looking to sale my AR-15 and purchase a new one. Many of the dealers where assembling their own rifles and I figured I could learn a lot by doing that myself. So, I decided to hold onto my current rifle and build a new one. On the spur of the moment I bought a Stag lower for $120 and the Trigger Parts Kit for $70. This was the only lower for sale and it was an impulse purchase. I know very little about Stag and I'm not sure if the price was reasonable. I spoke with a friend about it later and he challenged me to build the AR-15, with all new parts, for under $600. There is no money riding on this, just bragging rights. We also agreed I could include some used parts but I need to stay under $500 if anything is used. I already have a tactical stock which we are valuing and $70 for this challenge. I now have a finished lower, with trigger installed and a stock, for $260. I just need an upper, barrel, bolt & carrier and the charge handle. I have $340 more in my budget ($240 if I buy used parts). I don't need a carry handle, rails, or any other add-ons. Can this be done? Did I over pay for the lower parts? Can anyone point me to some good resources for cheap parts? I'm building a cheap gun so cheap parts and low quality are OK.

A.Seems kind of high for just a trigger parts kit unless there's some kind of premium stuff in there. If it's the rest of the lower parts, like the buffer tube and buffer, mag catch and roll pins, might be in the ballpark. You might be able to make your budget if you are content with A1 configuration and used parts, check Sarco's ads, they frequently will have beat-up surplus parts. There's a minor fad for building 'nam-era replica ARs these days, so those parts are going up, too. Hardest part is going to be finding an AR semi-auto bolt carrier and bolt head without busting the budget. Feddies don't like guys running around with M16 parts in their ARs, tend to put them in the crossbar hotel. Not even sure if grinding the M16 parts down will satisfy them these days. Hope you don't have an M16 hammer, sear or selector, you'd be in trouble already. Another bet is to haunt the shows, I've seen used uppers there fairly frequently. Again, you've got to watch what the components are. Generally, you get what you pay for. If you get a junk barrel, you're going to have a noise-maker and little else.
