Find A Used Car Online

Q.I've bought used cars online before, but things keep changing. What are some good websites that list cars for sale? I prefer to buy from private sellers, but I will consider dealers. I will only buy cars in my area, and I insist on bringing a prospective purchase to my mechanic. For what it's worth, I'm in New Jersey, in the NYC metro area. I'm looking for a VW Golf or Honda Civic hatchback, up to $7000, manual transmission. So I figured I'll end up getting a 1996 to 1998 model.

A.In general I like cars.com and autotrader.com the best. cars.com has a combination of ads listed on-line and from most papers in the US, so it's good to check local ads. autotrader.com is mainly on-line ads plus some dealers, but it's easy to spot them. Then there are more specific brand sites that have good ads. In my experience, the cars listed in them tend to be in better condition, but they also are more expensive. And then there's eBay. I wouldn't buy a car without checking it first, but you can find local listings by restricting your search region and check if the owner would agree to a pre-inspection.
