Find Local Used CarsQ.There seems to be a widely-held opinion that more knowledgeable folks go down the street and buy a clone from a local shop, while novices go to the big box manufacturers. Any truth to this? I sure don't see any price savings buying locally, and I'm not very impressed with most of the sales help in the stores.... A.I knew of one...but then again, I knew the owner personally. I wouldn't trust any of the large chain stores (CompUSA, BestBuy, etc.) as their sales staff ranges from "somewhat clueless" to "dangerously clueless." As a friend of mine once put it "The difference between a used cars salesman and a computer salesman, is that the used cars salesman knows when he's lying. I used to be one of the "build-it-yourself" types of user, but with today's prices, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. For my last two computers, when I speced a Dell vs. a build-it-yourself model, the price difference was under $200. What does that $200 buy me? Assembly, testing, software and support. What's your time worth to you? To assemble a system from scratch and install Win-something on it, you're looking at 3 to 4 hours (assembly, installation, upgrades, etc.) The only reasons I'd still suggest building a box from scratch is if you want something that isn't offered by Dell (eg. AMD processor based systems) or if you plan on upgrading your system very often (like once a month.) It used to be the only way to get a high-powered station was to build it yourself. This is no longer true in many cases. Other Questions : Buy Used Car CheapFriends, my lease has run up and I am looking for a new vehicle.
