Q.Just wondering if anyone has knowledge on what consumer protection might be available to purchasers of used cars from a dealer? Is it true that you're stuck with whatever deal you originally made? Is it true that if you're of legal age you can't renig on a used car purchase? I would appreciate any personal experiences, advice or related information anyone might have on this topic---in a hurry!

A.Most of it is between your ears. Get /The Savvy Woman's Guide to Used Cars/ and read it, and you'll have given yourself a huge leg up. Many states have laws requiring the true mileage on the car to be disclosed on the title -- you can ask to see this before you buy. The dealer doesn't have to offer a warranty, but you can certainly negotiate for one. The dealer doesn't have to let you have your mechanic look over the car before sale, but you can certainly ask -- and I would refuse to buy a car if my dealer wouldn't let my mechanic look at it. The word is "renege", and as far as I know you can't renege on a used-car purchase. At the Federal level, there is no law allowing you to void a car sale. Certain states have laws allowing the consumer to void certain kinds of purchases. I haven't heard of any that affect cars, but you can call your state attorney general's office and ask.
