Q.If you buy a used car from an individual, do you have to pay sales tax? I live in Georgia.

A.can't be sure about Georgia, but every other state I've lived in used this practice. You pay sales tax on any vehicle you buy, new or used. The only break that you get is typically if you trade a car in at a dealership then you only pay tax on the difference. For a private party transaction you pay the tax when you register the car. The one way that you can reduce your tax is to reduce what you claim you paid for the car. I'm not recomending this, but typically on the title where you sign over the car there is a location where the seller is supposed to put down the price it was sold at. But the seller usually could care less, so you could ask him to leave this blank and then you could fill in whatever you felt comfortable with. Some states even charge you sales tax if you do not buy a car but only move in the state. I had to pay tax on my old junkie when registering in MD. And it was "sales" tax - based on the "value" of my car. I'd be extremally happy ifr someone would ever pay me half of that "value" for this junkie...
