Help to buy used car

Q.I am looking to buy a used car (in Denmark). About the only thing I know about cars is how to start, change gear, and drive. Is there any general advice about purchasing a used car? I've been looking, for example, at something like a "Ford Escort 1.6i CLX station wagon". Here is a picture of a 1994 edition for about ?500 http://www.bilbasen.dk/biler/forhandlere/showcar.asp?id=559000285&page=9 Can one say that 188,000 km is a high mileage for such a car - too high? Would this be a good "family" car?

A.Get a local garage to look over it, or at least see what the seller's face looks like when you suggest it. At the least you might get some leverage for negotiating a lower price. Even though you don't know anything, raise the bonnet and have a look at and listen to the engine while it's running, have a look underneath the car at the front and back, etc. You'll still be able to get an impression of what state it's in even if you're not quite sure what you're looking at. When you test drive, make sure it changes gear smoothly (transmission work is expensive), operate lots of the little features it's meant to have to make sure they work - electric windows, central locking, whatever. Ask for a look at paperwork relating to its service history: invoices from garages, etc. Try to get some impression of what it's been used for. It's fairly high, but I'm not sure what to expect from such Escorts before all the expensive bits start going wrong. I'd expect so. An estate offers decent storage, at least.
