how to find used car in the U.S.A

Q.a friend has gone from London u.k. to Georgetown in north Dakota. he wants to buy an inexpensive used small family car either Toyota, Honda or vauxwagen golf. hey that's the cars we are used to, you know. how does one go about making such a purchase in that part of the world ? in the uk we have 'auto trader ' or loot, or exchange and mart magazines or the local papers or used car warehouses. can anyone advise on how to find a car in that part of the world or is it best to just trawl around used car lots?
