what's the best way to buy used car

Q.I recently got a Ilnois license I want some advise on how to buy a used car.

A.Most people suggest passing the word among friends and co-workers that you are in the market. Somebody often knows somebody who is about to buy another car, and would get more from you than from the car lot trade-in. Or knows an old person who had had this great car in the garage for decades and is selling for pocket change. (I missed out on a bunch of those over time!!!) Also, if you can work up a relationship with a nice salesperson at the dealership of the car you want, and ask them to let you know when a goodie comes in, suggesting you can make it worth their while... Thing about used cars - you never know when stuff is going to go out on you. Even the savviest buyer can't scope out every problem on the horizon. So here's a thought: Last year I bought my *first* car off a lot. For decades I had bought old American cars for cash. This time I bought a 1994 Toyota Corolla, with leather and other luxury items, and only 15K. I was SO sick of sudden, big-ticket car problems that I opted for a 3-year bumper-to-bumper warranty. It cost $1500, and I wasn't sure if it was a good idea, but as I said I was fed up with cri$e$. Whaddya know, 6 months after I bought the car, the starter went. Cost? $504. I paid $50 deductible. Those wrap-around warranties are only available for cars younger than a certain vintage; just detailing the above as something for you to consider, if appropriate.
