How To Sell A Used Car

Q.I'm looking to buy a used car, probably a 1-year-old, since the biggest yearly drop in value is in the 1st year (according to Consumer Reports and my own calculations on Escort, Corolla, and Prizm using www.edmunds.com). My question is: why would someone sell a 1-year-old car, unless it was a real lemon? Are these all early returns on a 3/36 lease? Or am I missing something, and these 1-year-olds are really ok cars? Also, does the original warranty (3/36 or 5/60, etc) transfer if I buy the 1-year-old car from the owner? From a dealer?

A.On a few ocassions, my father would sell his one year old car in favor of something new. Why? Because he could afford it and he wanted to. He's a car fanatic. He only did this on two or three ocassions though. I know of at least two friends of my parents who refused to own a car for more than one year. They simply had to drive the newest car and they wanted the newest safety technology and improved gas mileage. This thinking was totally antithetical to living a frugal lifestyle, but than again, no everyone cars about being frugal. I don't understand why anyone would own more than one car. One friend of mine recently purchased a fancy Lexus SUV and than two months later, he supplemented it with a brand new Mercedes convertible. Why? Because that's what he wanted. In my case, I am looking to get rid of my relatively luxurious two year old car in favor of an old junker. When I purchased my car, that's what was important to me; a nice luxurious car. Now, I see that owning my car is simply an expense I do not need to have on my shoulders so I figure I will probably get rid of it and buy a cheap used bomber just to use for shopping and getting to work fast if an emergency arises (instead of using public transit). All in all though, it boils down to a matter of personal preference.
