Q.I'm looking for a piece of hard stainless steel for an all-purpose backpacking knife. I heard about surgical still as the best, but I couldn't find any reference to it. I would appreciate any advice on the following: - what are the types of this steel or a good alternative steel? - who sells/trades it? - is it heat treated, and what are the treatment conditions? - how machinable is it? - is there any good handbook on these types of steel?

A.I like inexpensive alternatives. I own a folding knife made in Pakistan, made from carbon steel. As long as you keep it clean, you should not have any problems with corrosion. It also holds an edge very well. I am also aware of machete's made from jeep (leaf) springs. If you don't mind an unusual source, try used auto parts. It's not elegant, but it is a functional solution for cost-critical applications. I am sure that other inexpensive sources exist as well.
