Price of Spector basses in Europe

Q.I have a question for the ones in the know... I wanted to buy me a Spector Euro 4. I live in France and found out that the best price I could find was about 50% higher in Europe (about 1700 euros) than in the USA (about 1100 euros). Moreover, the availability is scarse here : you have one bass here and there, but there is not much choice. One would think that a higher price would relate with a better service or something like that. It is exactly the contrary... There are very few Spector Euro 4 basses available here, not much choice on colours. It also seems impossible to buy the bass directly from the United States. I guess this is to ensure that you buy them from the Europe distributors. But, the choice is so scarse and the price being 50% higher, there is as much choice for a used one, rather than a new one. So it seems much more sensible to buy a used one here rather than a new one : as much choice and a better price. On a used one Spector gets nothing. I really don't get what is the scheme behind this...

A.There is no sales tax or VAT applied on goods from outside the EEC until they get to the port of entry in the EEC. US sales tax is very low and rarely included in advertised price. You therefore pay import duty and VAT at country rates. Here in the UK it is 3% plus 17.5% (19.6% in France) on top of advertised US price....plus shipping. I do this stuff for a living. It does not work out such a good deal. I've found European Spector vendors but you will not find a huge choice as Spector is a niche brand.
