Q.My second generation (1986) Mazda RX-7's tail lights and the dash board lights wouldn't go on anymore, so I brought it to a Mazda dealer (Vachon Mazda) in Attleboro, MA. They said that the switch and some wires behind the dashboard are melted and asked $550 to replace it ($320 for the switch + labor). Don't you think this is crazy? The headlights and the brake lights work fine. I don't have a problem with having the tail lights on full-time. Could I just shortcut the wires to eliminate the switch? Can I find a used switch?

A.First, go to another dealer. Vachon has had lots of problems. They, guarenteed, won't fix it right the first time. If another dealer says it is the switch, ask the service tech to have the mechanic show you the problem. They will. Now you know where the switch is. Go to a junkyard and pull one yourself. Goldies on 1A in Walpole or Millis Used Auto parts on 109 in Millis. There's even some foreign junkyard next to Millis Used. You can also try John's in Bellingham. I bet you can get it for under $10 (unless the guy at the counter knows what it's worth - which is doubtful).
