Appraising used boats

Q.Is there a publication like the NADA Used Car Price Guide or Kelly Blue Book for boats? Are they regionalized -- I'd be interested in Puget Sound prices, for instance. And if such guides exist, where how do you get a hold of one?

A.the BUC book is the standard reference for used boat prices. I don't believe they are regionalized - but am not sure. The ones I've seen have no region information in them - but I've not seen them all. Credit unions and banks than handle boat financing have BUC books available. (at least in our water-oriented area) Before you buy a used boat, have it surveyed by someone who is a member of the national survey organization (NEMS, I think). There is a VERY WIDE range of fair prices on a used boat - depending on the maintenance condition. A survey will tell the fair price range. If you make an offer on a boat, always insist that it be subject to survey! Spend the few dollars and save a lat of problems!
