Nada Used Car Price

Q.I am in the market for a '67-'69 Firebird, preferably a convertible but I am also considering hardtops. In browsing the classifieds, I notice there is a wide range of prices depending on condition, model, etc... Does anyone one have a suggestion regarding what resource I can consult in order to get a good idea of what the prices should be for these lovely cars?

A.Prices for used cars vary widely as you have noticed. They also vary widely based on the region of the country you are in. For instance, in the midwest (the rustbelt) you will pay more, generally, for an older car just because there aren't many of them around. In the southwest the cars are a little more plentiful and the old law of supply and demand comes into play, meaning they are cheaper there. The people who write the Kelly Blue Book, the Black book and the NADA used car price guides recognize this and publish different books for the various region around the country. The best way to find out what a particular car is selling for in your part of the world is to do some research. Check the local papers and the "Trader" type publications. Then go look at some cars that interest you. If you find one you like and the price is within what you want to spend, buy it and don't worry about what the so called price guides say it should be worth. BTW, the national price guides are generally based on the selling prices of cars at auctions. If you have ever been to one you will know that these prices are often higher than what the cars can be bought for on the street.
