Used car prices?Q.Not that im complaining, but used car prices seem to be getting better all the time. The weekend paper has ads for 2000 commodores $19K 2000 Falcons for $16K, Magnas for a song. I remember back in '91 paying $13K for an 87 VL Commodore!! Why are used car prices so cheap? A.+ it's true , your buying power has increased over the last few years . mostly because of cheaper new cars and factory discounting - the hyundai's were very popular in the mid 90's for that reason, people thought better about paying 12 grand for an 86 laser when they could buy a brand new Hyundai . This type of trend has continued and dumped many used car prices. Never been a better time for to buy - I've just sold my(new) car to take advantage of it and save big money . Now to decide what to buy. + I paid 28 grand for a ZL Fairlane in 1988, and I still own the thing There's a myriad of reasons for this. One such reason is that manufacturers have shot themselves in the foot by opting to "raise the bar" with each new model. With every new car, they seem to be trying to pack more equipment into the entry level models without much of a price difference over the model it replaces, in order to attract new buyers and entice people out of their old cars somewhat earlier than they might normally decide to update. Look at the BA XT for example. It comes standard with a level of equipment that a new car buyer would have had to pay 5 grand extra in a Fairmont a few years ago. This is good for us new car buyers, but it's also *bad* for those of us who have older cars, as they suddenly become less desirable and worth considerably less money. It's also a problem manufacturers like Mitsubishi have with "old" cars such as the Magna. The Current Magna is an old car in automotive terms, with it's body having been around for quite some time, and although it's gone through a series of mechanical "refreshes", it's generally a dinosaur in the appearance stakes. To get around this, Mitsubishi sees fit to have "factory discounts" every now and then, selling the car at a rock bottom price to try and get people interested in it. However, the effect this factory discounting has on used Magna's is appalling, with 12 month old versions often being worth less than 50% of their new purchase price. This problem affects the Magna worse than any other car in the country at the moment, and anyone who buys a brand new Magna today is doing nothing other than throwing away a *huge* sum of money to do little other than pick their paint colour...
