Used car prices?Q.I know that the used car guides have a 6 level pricing scheme where a low mileage car that's been stored will be a 6 and a bearly running (or not running) parts car is a 1. So how does one tell the differences between these catagories? What's the difference between a four and a five, for instance? Would anyone care to define each of the categories? Is placing a random used car in it's proper category a science, like botany or entomology, or just a matter of opinion like "I think Vanna White is prettier than Madonna"? A.As for your second question (why 4 door sedans have little relative value), buyers and sellers establish a market which values the different body styles. Here are some factors: 4 door sedans are usually the highest production body style, thus the most common. 4 door sedans are commonly bought by people who take better care of the cars. Consider that wagons get beat up in hauling, and 2 doors/convertibles find popularity with teenagers who flail the tar out of them. Only old folks want 4 doors, and old folks generally take better care of their cars and don't use them as much. So, by the time the car is 10 - 15 years old, the sporty models are mostly in the junkyard, while there are still many extremely nice old sedans around. People who buy old cars often do so out of nastalgia. Thus, buyers want what was popular when they were teenagers. These are the same sporty and stylish cars they wore out when they were kids, so, even though the cars are more scarce, they are in the highest demand. The cars most in favor with old people when the buyer was a teenager are likely to be the least sought after old cars.
