Is Edmunds a good used car pricer?

Q.I have read -- are based on west coast cars which usually are in better shape not having to suffer through harsh winters and of course experience (or at least experienced it before the dot.com bust...) a pretty afffluent market which helped to sustain the high used (and new) car prices there. Recent events have hammered used car prices. Primarily the influx of huge numbers of used cars from buyers taking advantage of the new car incentives. (I've seen/heard ads by some car dealers who are offering zero percent financing on used cars to move some of the many used cars that are not on teh lots.) I would be inclined to offer less for the car and hang tough. You can always up your offer should the seller refuse to lower his price. But you might get the car for less than the asking price. If the car is a good deal at the asking price, shouldn't it be an even better deal at a lower price?

A.The price you see quoted in the USA is not what you'd pay if you could buy as an import. Add shipping + insurance at around $100 Add import duty and VAT...minimum 20% plus whatever exchange rate the CC company feels like charging...and the warranty will not be valid outside of the country of purchase. It all adds up. Average UK price that model is E1500 There is no sales tax or VAT applied on goods from outside the EEC until they get to the port of entry in the EEC. US sales tax is very low and rarely included in advertised price. You therefore pay import duty and VAT at country rates. Here in the UK it is 3% plus 17.5% (19.6% in France) on top of advertised US price....plus shipping. I do this stuff for a living. It does not work out such a good deal. I've found European Spector vendors but you will not find a huge choice as Spector is a niche brand. Google is your friend.
