Price Of A Used Car

Q.I am a 17 soon to be senior and my Mom said she would get me a used car as a graduation present. But since I'm going to be driving around so much this year, she said I could either get a car now or wait till I graduate. So of course I choose to get the car now, the only hitch is that it would have to last me through college, meaning I'd have to get a car which would last 5 years. After I found out more about the car, I decided that the perfect car for me would either be a 94 SL2 or SC2, equiped with a power sunroof and around 50k miles. So I checked the various price guides on net to get an idea of a fair price. I showed it to my Mom and she said that would be around what she'd like to pay. So the search for a Saturn began. I knew I probally wouldn't find exactly what I wanted since I was shopping used but I was willing to compromise. I'll have about a whopping 2 days to get used to driving a standard. I'm considering one at another dealership, a 94 SL1 with a power sunroof, which means 39 less hp than I'd like, less comfortable seats, and also a transmission thats harder to shift. I just hope that the SL1 uses the same clutch as an SL2. Does anyone know if they do?

A.This seems to be a common topic in this channel. Whenever you go to a dealer, any dealer, you should expect to pay MORE than the market value for the car. Even the most reliable sources, such as Edmunds Guide and Kelley's Blue Book warn you of this when you use their pricing guides. However, there is a catch in that Saturn Certified Used cars come with a 1 year bumper to bumper warranty and have already been inspected by a mechanic and certified on like 100 and some odd tests. You can literally drive your new used saturn off the lot and not have to worry about anything for a year, not even minor stuff. Try that with any other dealership? Try that when buying your car from a private owner? I've bought 3 used cars from dealers/private owners. All three within the first year incurred over $1000 of repair work. You need to factor in the fact that you get a warranty when you buy from the saturn dealer when making your comparisson. Extended warranties are not cheap. However, I would have to agree with yout on the fact that $2000 over fair market value is a little excessive, though not uncommon. And, if the saturn dealer does not put the sticker price in the widow of the vehicle, I would not trust him.
