Question about car pricesQ.Why is it just about every other consumer product comes down in price, but cars keep getting more expensive? All of these things have more technology(just like cars) now then years ago, yet cars get more expensive. Still, I think we are lucky here (Canada and U.S.) because I know in Europe and other parts of the world, cars are extremely expensive as well as gas. I'm just curious is all sort of government conspiracy? A.Just buy used. Much cheaper... Think about it, after you drive your brand new car off the lot it's value drops by at least 1/4 and that's only for a couple miles. My dad got a car which had 50 miles or so on it from a dealer. The person who bought it changed their mind or something and took it back, and the dealer sold it to him for significantly less than the new price, but besides looking at the odometer you would neer know it had been off the lot. I don't know though... Maybe it's the new technology in the new cars that drives the prices up? Perhaps requirements to meeet both MPG and pollution standards? Maybe for laughs next time you go to a dealership you can ask why cars keep getting more expensive. lol In all likelihood though it's because people will pay higher prices. People want new cars, as most people think used cars are trouble and junk. People are paranoid for no good reason about how many miles are on the car, and most people don't understand how to evaluate a used car. If people will pay a higher price, chances are someone will charge the higher price. And if one person can... Well, you know where it goes from there. I guess I'll end my nonsensical ramblings now. Most people I know with cars from the 80s run like crap and have deteriorated quite a bit, whereas most people I know with cars from the 60s are in fairly good condition. Most have some rust, but the car's 20 years older than an 80s car. In either case, most of the 60s cars run better with twice the mile on the original engine/transmission than the 80s cars. The main thing I've noticed about newer cars is that in general they seem to have a lot of transmission trouble, and it happens a lot sooner than in older cars. There are just my observations from the fairly limited amount of people I know with these kinds of cars, but it's a generally persistent trend. Other Questions : Dealers Who Buy Used CarsFor those of you who've tried to trade in an older Toyota for a new one -- have you noticed the dealership really lowballing the prices on the trade in? I'm just wondering if this is typical. The price on the car they wanted to sell me was reasona... Selling a used car, how do I avoid scams?I've gotten a couple of responses but they sound fishy to me. In both cases the buyer is out of state and wants to arrange to have the car shipped, that just doesn't sound right. It's a 94 Concorde with 128K miles on it, it's not a hard to ge... Find A Cheap Used CarMy car was recently totalled by an uninsured driver in CA (where insurance is legally required!). Blue Book Value Used CarsMy husband's father bought my husband a car in '87. When we got married in '88 we took over the payments, and paid the car off in '91. The car's title is still in my father-in-law's name. We'd like to transfer the car to my husband's name, but ...
