Reliable Used Cars

Q.The fact is I do NOT drive more than 20k miles a year, so by your formula a used car would be better for me. However, the problem is, there is no guarantee with 3 year old cars, and I don't want to take the risk of having a 3 year old car that is a lemon. As to one or two year old cards, I just looked at a Civic that's a 2005 with only 18k miles on it, but they are asking $17k for it!!!??? Not sure what the real price would be, but I assume I'd be lucky to get it for $14k, then with an extended warranty we'd be up to about the same as a new one. So really, it makes no sense to buy a used car less than 3 years old, and when you get one that old, there is more of a risk of problems.

A.you can only say it makes no sense to buy that particular used car (the overpriced Civic). You really can't generalize from one example. There is a whole range of deals out there, some good, some bad. I have only bought one brand new car, ever. I can't say that I was happier with it, or that it was any more reliable than most of the used cars I have purchased. (It was a Japanese make, BTW.) Of course, buying used is less risky if you have some mechanical knowledge and are willing to put some effort into the shopping experience. If you want a no-hassel off-the-rack purchase, maybe you should just spend the extra money and buy new.
