Search Used Cars By PriceQ.As a driver in the 18-25 age bracket, I am aware of the impending costs of auto insurance in relationship to the type of car I own. American Family Insurance agents have told me to basically follow the home-spun rule book. However, Some kinda rule out a lot of fun cars. So I have come up with an alternate list of cars. Are there any other suggestions? I'm looking for something fun to drive, and still follows the rules above...Something around 13-16K. 17K tops. Would prefer New over used. Incidentally, the agents also told me MX-6 was out, and the Probe GT was also out, but the Probe base line model was possibly okay? What does that mean? I thought the MX-6 and Probe were basically the same automobiles...help? A.What you do: - Go to all the dealerships in your area and drive a bunch of cars. - Pick out about 5 cars that you like, and would consider buying. - Go to your insurance agent and check the cost of premiums. - Then take the insurance rates in combination with the price of the car and figure out just how much this car is really going to cost you. Another thing you might check out. One of the new car buyers guides I saw in the bookstore had a little rating at the bottom of each "review" showing expected insurance costs. Smaller cars like the Prizm, Civic, Neon were usually classified as high insurance, and larger Crown Vic's were classified as like 'average to low'. See if you can find that same book. It's a useful thing to have just to give you some suggestions and ideas of what cars to go looking at, along with some idea of invoice prices. Also consider Search values (hard to predict for Neon) because purchase price isn't the only factor in "cost of ownership" over the life of the car. You might easily recover hundreds (even thousands) of dollars in resale value -- even five or ten years down the road. Or you might not. It's anyone's guess how Neon will do -- but historically, Civic resale values are have been truly amazing.
