Q.Just heard a report that the Raleigh NC city council is seriously considering a ban on doing anything to your car in your own yard other than washing it. Where do these people get off!?

A.Here in my corner of The Peoples Republik of Kalifornia there have been similar laws on the books for years. Luckily they're seldom enforced unless there's a specific complaint. It seems that a lot of these ordinances are introduced at the request of auto repair facilities who see home auto repair as a threat to their livelihood. Ditto for selling used car parts. The dismantlers' assoc- iations have been lobbying to ban private sales of used car parts for years. They banned washing your car in your driveway here in Calgary other than with plain water. What a joke! They'll send the bylaw cops to your door if they catch you putting bubbles down the street but they're not fining Canadian Tire, Autopar, UAP/NAPA et al for selling the car washing products to you in the first place! No, you wouldn't want to upset that applecart!
