Should I Buy A New Or Used Car

Q.Now that I just graduated from college and got a descent job, i no longer need a roomate. I want to get my own Apt and live there for few years until I get married, buy house or etc.. Curretnly I don't have a furniture so I need to buy couch, bed, tv, laundary machine, chairs, table and etc.. My question to NG is that how much should i spend for these things..Should I buy new or used items? I want to have descent apt with descent furntiure but I don't want to spend a lof money...Any idea how to go about deciding how much i should spend?

A.Hit garage sales on weekends for your furniture. Pick out things that are important to you. For instance, I like a very long couch. They're hard to find these days, so when a good long used couch was available, I snatched it right up. You can slip cover it if it's in bad shape. My fave bed is a solid foam rubber mattress. These tend to be very clean, even used. Shop around. Get nicely made things, even if you have to do small repairs or repaint to make them look ok. Remember that no surface is so bad that it can't be fixed or at least improved on with some paint. Get your electronics new. There are so many good deals out there for electronics that there is no advantage in getting them used. I think that I will almost aways buy used if I can find good quality regardless of how much money I have! Used doesn't necessarily mean cheap/worn-out/college-student-looking-hand me downs. (If I do say so myself, we have some fairly nice furniture and it was all bought 2nd hand.) Start looking at things now so you have an idea of costs. And move slowly on the furniture buying - once you find a place to live, just get the few things that you'd consider necessities - eg bed, dresser, couch, dining table, etc...whatever is most important to you. Don't try to furnish a whole place at once if it's not in your budget. Pay attention to yard sales, ads in the classifieds, ebay whatever. At the same time look at how much things cost new.
