Used -auto parts colorado.Q.I bought a used 1996 Grand Cherokee Laredo (auto/v8) with 112K miles. I have driven about 3+k miles in it and I got the following things fixed: 1. Balanced the tires. 2. Replaced front CV boots - both left and right (one was split and other was almost there). 3. Replaced tansfer case input and output seals. 4. Had two recall services done - since the pervious unknown owner did not get them done - got new rotors and brake pads. I plan to get it checked for any other leaks since I do see oil at the bottom, even though the oil dip gauges do not indicate any oil loss. The ride is smooth and the GC just glides quietly and easily on the Highways without any engine noise. Before I got this GC, I had a 1994 Isuzu Rodeo (manual 5 speed) with 110K miles which was totaled and in exchange I decided to buy this used GC for all the extra comforts and gizmos. Now the problem is I was totally used to maintenance free Rodeo - great brakes (never replaced them and they still seemed strong!), great driving, no leaks ever, no fussy problems, just regular oil changes! I am just not used to shelling money for a car and I want to avoid doing that for this GC. To avoid any future maintenance hogs, I need tips like: 1. Should I use 87 octane instead of 85 oct gas - I am in Colorado? I did not notice any pinging when I tried 85 but switched back to 87 .. as reccommended by the manual. A gas guzzler - giving me 16mpg compared to 21mpg on 85 octane than I was used to. 2. Should I use synthetic oil since I am not sure what the previous owner was using? Which brand oil is good? 3. What is the best way to find a mechanic who will not charge $75/hr for simple fixes? (Repairs 2&3 costed about $600!, while the dealer was asking for 900+!). 4. What are reliable auto parts place for this 1996 GC? 5. Where to go for major maintenance schedules - instead of going to the dealer? A.I just replaced my 95 ZJ V8 with 136,000 (wreck victim to a Ford pickup) with a 96 with 68,000. I loved the first one so much that I just looked for the same thing. 1. Balanced tires is normal. I do mine about every 7-10,000 miles, or if needed. 2. I had transfer case seals on mine go out about 85,000 miles. Pretty normal on most 4x4's. 3. Recalls... the one I just bought had a laundry list that had not been done my the previous owner. Go figure. But they were wtill recalls (all minor) and are being dealt with by Jeep at no charge. 4. Brakes. I live in the mountains of Wyoming, so brakes are a regular item here. I had the brakes replaced under warrantee at 35,000 miles (disks warped), and then had the brakes done at 135,000 miles (yes, just before it got wiped out). 5. I had the thermostat and the water pump go out around 130,000 miles. 6. I lost an axle seal on the right front about 95,000 miles, but I am off road with this rig a lot! 7. The newer one I just got is getting shocks on it later this week. It still has the original ones. As to getting other things done, expect an intake manifold gasket if it has not already been replaced. Possibly plugs, wires, etc. Fluids changed. Serpentine belt possibly. You know, the normal stuff on an older vehicle. You will have the normal stuff with the Jeep. No more, no less. Same as the Rodeo (did you know that a very high number of the parts on the Rodeo are GM, like the engine, etc.?). Sorry to say it, but to get one that is 'maintenance free', buying one at 100,000+ miles is not the way to go.
