Used Auto Parts Atlanta

Q.I talked to Ed the trans guy about this. He said a grind clunk is not indicative of a C4 problem. And I don't see a corresponding problem in the factory manual. The only other parts in common with the automatic are the flexplate and u-joints. Something coming loose at rpm that the shift rectifies? Does this happen on 2-3? Have an inline filter on the trans line? Might be plugged and not flowing well at rpm? Does the toploader use the same crossmember as the automatic? I want to put a toploader in my '73 Gran Torino and as far as I can tell it's identical to a Montego under the sheetmetal. Maybe we could work out a swap for a slightly used (wink-wink) C-6 with a 385 bellhousing, Cheetah valve body kit, and 10" TCI Street Fighter converter?

I would have never guessed I'd have to pull the steering wheel and dash to put a 4-speed in. I know they were offered from the factory with either manual or automatic transmissions. I would have guessed Ford installed the same support in both applications and not install the clutch pedal for the automatics. I guess I have to start scouring the papers for a cheap 4-speed parts car. The used auto parts industry in the Atlanta area is severely lacking on affordable parts for older cars. Maybe when I move back to Texas this summer I'll be able to find used parts a bit easier.
