Used Auto Parts In Atlanta

Q.I have a '73 Montego with a warmed-over 351C. After the engine mods, the C4 started to fail. It would make a grind-clunk going into second. After a while, it became a griiiiiind-clunk. Eventually, it would just make the grind noise. I got another pan-fill C4 at the junkyard. It was obviously rebuilt, and came from another Monty. After a while, same thing started. I said forget that, and swapped in a toploader. I went through that second C4. All of the clutches looked great. The steels had no hot spots. Nothing was obviously broken. I replaced the intermediate band with a hi-perf version and added a B&M shift kit. Well, I just got it in and went for a test drive. It seemed to work fine. So I got on it. Grind-clunk. Now it's grind-clunk into second all the time. Many foul words followed. This has to be a familiar failure symptom common to C4s under stress. What is it and how do I fix it?

A.I talked to Ed the trans guy about this. He said a grind clunk is not indicative of a C4 problem. And I don't see a corresponding problem in the factory manual. Let me get this straight, 'cuz I'm a little cornfused. You put a Top Loader in this car while you were messing around with the C4? Was this a stick originally, because that seems like a lot of effort? The problem went away during the stick phase? Why didn't you leave it in? The only other parts in common with the automatic are the flexplate and u-joints. Something coming loose at rpm that the shift rectifies? Does this happen on 2-3? Have an inline filter on the trans line? Might be plugged and not flowing well at rpm? The thing here is that if you are getting a metallic grind, there would some particles in the pan and fluid. If not, then it just may not be the trans.
