Q.This weekend I saw a movie based on the book, The Beans of Egypt, Maine. It was a pretty good movie but I'm betting that this is one terrific book. Has anyone read this book or any others by the same author, which is Carolyn Chute. I think that so much was left out of the movie. Can anyone tell me more about the book or the author?

A.I thoroughly enjoyed the book, which I read several years ago. The interesting thing to me is that I have never found another person who thought it was really good. People usually describe it as "depressing". I liked the realism, character development, and the *oddness* of the whole thing. Not at all like my life, but interesting to view from a distance. Chute wrote a book published last year, called "The Merry Men", which I believe is supposed be a continuation of the earlier novel. I haven't read it yet, though. I didn't think it was 'depressing'
