Q.WHAT HAPPENS TO OLD KITCHEN CABINETS? Every time a kitchen is remodeled, the old cabinets have to be removed. Where do they all go? Shouldn't there be a market for them somewhere? If there is a market for used auto parts, why not used kitchen parts? Why aren't there stores selling them in huge quantities? Are they all destroyed or damaged during removal? Are they swallowed by a black hole?

A.Here in Baltimore, there is a nonprofit organization called the Loading Dock which accepts donations of usable household fixtures and sells them very cheap to low-income homeowners and groups that fix up housing for the poor. I have donated old kitchen cabinets, a bathtub, and some other stuff to them (and it's a tax-deductible charitable contribution). People in other cities should look for a similar organization in their town. It's a shame to take stuff like that to the dump. The 1892 spice cabinet (this was a major piece of work, about 8 feet tall, 4 wide) is in my basement office, missing drawers and glass doors, as a book and computer software storage case.
