Used Auto Parts Minneapolis

Q.My odometer does not work while the speed seems to register fine. Can I not just find a doner speedometer in a used auto parts yard with similar mileage and install it in my car?? I don't plan to sell the car but it would be nice to have the mileage portion working to keep track of gas mileage and service intervals. My state does not require odometer certification statements on cars of this vintage (1986) when transferring titles so it seems they wouldn't care

A.I had the small blue gear break apart (into several pieces) in my wife's '84 240 GL. I tried a new(er) gear but no luck. Finally i went into Hemmings and found a fellow in Minneapolis who did rebuilds on tacs, speedos, and other gauges. ATP was the name (or perhaps APT) in Burlington. In just a few hours he did a total rebuild of the speedo. He explained why these VDO speedos failed. he also explained how to do the rebuild........ That was in 1991. Only thing we have had to do since then in replace the speedo cable. If you get a used speedo you will have the potential of it failing. Get it rebuilt by someone who can do and is knowledgeable about VDO speedos.
