Used Car Auctions???Q.I have the opportunity to buy a used car at a dealer auction free of comission or extra charges. The main advantage would seem to be getting a very good price (dealer cost), with disadvantages being 1) no true opportunity to test drive the car, 2) no accountable party for problems. Suggestions, Reccomendations? What type backgrounds should I expect to find (rentals, problem cars, high mileages, normal used cars)? A.My advice is don't do it unless there is someone with you who has experience at these things, and even then, be prepared to gamble. I got the car that I have now this way, and I've had it since 1980. It is probably the best, longest-lasting car I will ever have - and I got it for wholesale. However mine was a special case. My uncle was a car dealer, and going to these things was his job. He knew what to look for, and the right price to pay. And even then there was uncertainty, since he couldn't give the car the kind of going-over that it would normally get. The reason why you take such a gamble at these things is because the cars that are sold at these auctions tend to be those taken in trade at new-car dealerships, which don't pass muster to be sold at their lots. Sometimes they just have too many cars and need to get rid of some, but often it is because they are high-mileage or have some other problem which makes them hard to sell. Sometimes these aren't so bad - the problems with mine were 1-rust spot on hood 2- worn tires 3- bad alignment 4 - slightly high mileage (but not outrageous - 35,000 on a 1 1/2 yr. old). The tires and alignment were easy to fix, although I just lived with the rust spot for 8 years until I got another hood from a junker. Sometimes they are horrible. And you might not be able to tell the difference. I was lucky. But the best advice is get somebody who is familiar with these auctions to go with you.
